I first read them when I was about 14 and had to special-order the later books in the series. (pre-Ebay) There's a definite atmosphere to the entire series that really appealed to me, and I liked the naturalist/scientific curiosity/learn-how-to-do-it-yourself attitude of all of the characters. I read the Swallows and Amazon books a number of times and loved them. I first read them when I was about 14 and had to special-order the later books in the series.
